Fairhaven appointed to manage historic Osbaldeston Trust almshouses in Leyland
Fairhaven Housing Association has been appointed by the Osbaldeston Trust to manage its historic almshouses in Leyland, strengthening the long tradition of providing secure, affordable housing for older people in the local community.
The Osbaldeston Trust dates back to 26 November 1665, when Londoner John Osbaldeston bequeathed £500 “to the poor of the Township of Leyland,” stipulating that the funds be invested in land for that purpose.
By the late 18th century, the Trust had built several almshouses in the Fox Lane area of Leyland, with further homes added in the mid‑20th century. Today, the Trust owns 13 almshouses in total, which have been modernised to a high standard and provide well‑managed, secure housing for independent, elderly people.
Under the new arrangement, Fairhaven Housing Association will oversee the day-to-day property repairs and long-term future maintenance strategy for the Trust’s housing stock, many of which are historic buildings within the Leyland Cross Conservation Area. Established in 1980, the not-for-profit specialises in the management of privately-owned retirement housing across its seven sites in Lancashire. In addition, Fairhaven also manages multiple estates across the county on behalf of resident management companies.
Chris Marsden, Trustee of the Osbaldeston Trust, said: “Over the years, John Osbaldeston’s legacy has supported generations of Leyland residents, and by partnering with Fairhaven, we are ensuring that his vision continues for many years to come, with a professional estate management that puts our residents first.”
Andrew Atkinson, managing director of Fairhaven, concluded: “We’re proud to have been entrusted with the management of the Osbaldeston Trust’s almshouses. Our partnership with the Trust allows us to support older people in Leyland with high‑quality, secure accommodation that respects their independence while providing peace of mind.”
