Local area

Parbold lies in the valley of the River Douglas at the bottom of Parbold Hill. The earliest reference to the village can be found in the 12th century however there was very little activity until 18th and 19th century when small seams of coal were mined and sandstone was quarried.
The Leeds Liverpool Canal lies close to the village centre but it was the building of the railway station in the mid-19th century that radically changed the village.
The railway station allowed middle class workers to live in the village and commute to the major urban areas in the North West.
The village is widely seen as an affluent area and sits between the local towns of Ormskirk, Skelmersdale and Wigan.
