Penwortham is a town located within South Ribble on the south bank of the River Ribble overlooking the city of Preston. The town is the most westerly crossing point of the river.
The town has a rich history which can be traced as far back as pre-historic times with archaeological evidence showing that the ford at Middleforth was used to cross the River Ribble.
The town was recorded in the Doomsday Book and Penwortham Castle, a motte-and-bailey castle, was built during the post-Norman conquest period overlooking the Ribble and its ford.
The town has two high quality supermarkets, one of which is opposite Crownlee, and a bustling main street with retail, restaurants and wine bars.
Penwortham Town Council organises the annual Gala and the Penwortham in Bloom community competition.
Penwortham can also boast an 18 hole golf course.
The town enjoys good transport links into Preston which has a major railway station on the West Coast Mainline and is served by the A59 which links to Liverpool and Southport.
